Produced by Mitutoyo, the leading manufacturer of measuring tools and machinery, the book contains 398 pages explaining the construction and use of basic measuring tools through to some of the most sophisticated calibration and inspection equipment available today.
The material is presented in metric and imperial units and supported by more than 400 colour photos and illustrations. While primarily intended for trainees who attend courses run by the Mitutoyo Institute of Metrology, this book is also a very useful reference for any reader whether a skilled engineer, apprentice or student.

This new edition of Mitutoyo’s Metrology Handbook has been produced not only to update existing material but also to expand coverage into areas of dimensional metrology that seem to gain in importance with each passing year. Extensive additions and revisions have increased the number of chapters by two and the page count by 50% while maintaining the original aim of providing an informative and accessible reference to all levels of reader.
The opportunity has been taken to provide deeper coverage of the more commonly encountered uses of the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) together with an overview of specialist applications such as aerofoil and gear measurement. An appreciation of ISO10360 has been added to help prospective CMM users interpret manufacturers’ accuracy specifications. A separate chapter is devoted to the ever-expanding range of probing systems.
There is an increasing need for a sound appreciation of product specification principles and this has prompted an extensive revision of the Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) material. Drawings to explain feature definitions are now included and this much larger chapter is intended to provide enough detail for the reader to confidently progress to an accurate interpretation of the relevant international standards themselves.
